, that friday afternoon bombshell. david petraeus resigns at the cia after the fbi uncovers his extramarital affair. pierre thomas is here with the latest. first came upon this several months ago. >> yes, it came to light after a woman in tampa tied to military got a peculiar, harassing e-mail. the woman was so concerned, she contacted the fbi, who, then, according to our sources, traced it back to paula broadwell, who wrote a book about petraeus. as the fbi continued to investigate, they discovered e-mails pointing to a romantic, sexual relationship between the two. early concerns about the e-mails being hacked. but the investigation never turned up evidence of national security being compromised. but what did find was lots of human drama. >> what more do they have to investigate now and why wasn't the white house told until this week? >> the fbi investigation is largely done and the early evidence is that there will not be criminal charges. again, sources say that this deinvolved into a personal matter. petraeus had been confronted in the last couple of weeks, as for the timing of the disc
enforcement will be on the hunt for any terror plots aimed at destroying our joy. and today the fbi provided a wake-up call that there may be radicals among us. anwar al awlaki was the world's most wanted man, public enemy number one, encouraging radicals to attack america in his online preaching. the u.s. killed him in a drone strike in 2011, but today we learn awlaki is still helping to recruit terrorists from the grave. overnight the fbi announced charges against four californian men accused of plotting to go to afghanistan to bomb and kill u.s. soldiers. they were disciples of awlaki. >> there was an extensive amount of their admiration for him and, quite frankly, idolizing anwar awlaki. >> reporter: the alleged ringleader, sohiel kabir was a former member of the u.s. air force. the fbi claims the terror cell conducted training and went to shooting ranges and bought tickets to travel to afghanistan through mexico. >> this was a violent extremist network. we took this very, very seriously. >> reporter: according to the fbi's charges, one of the alleged terror cell's members had posted vio
the fbi, which traced those e-mails back to the computer of paula broadwell, where they discovered the evidence of broadwell's affair with petraeus. broadwell, seen tonight at her brother's home in washington, sipping wine and having dinner, admitted her affair with petraeus but has not commented on her e-mails she allegedly sent to the other woman, jill kelly. there is more, abc news learned that general allen received an anonymous e-mail traced to broadwell, claiming jill kelly was a seductress. a further look by the fbi into kelly's e-mails revealed hundreds between kelly and allen. 20,000 to 30,000 pages of communication in all. secretary of defense leon panetta put general allen's promotion to nato supreme commander on hold and ordered a full investigation of the allen/kelly relationship. >> today, the secretary directed the matter be referred to the inspector general of the department of defense for investigation. >> reporter: jill kelly spent the day at her home in tampa not answering questions. in the background, a television could be seen with news coverage of the payton p
